Like cryotherapy, compression therapy has been around for decades as a medical treatment. NormaTec is one of the biggest compression therapy names in the market, and they started as a medical device company to treat a condition called lymphedema (chronic swelling).

The suits themselves are complex, but what they do is pretty straightforward: they're compressing and decompressing, encouraging blood flow throughout the user's body. Your circulatory system delivers oxygen, nutrients, and hormones to every cell in your body. Simultaneously, this complex circuit removes metabolic wastes such as carbon dioxide and lactic acid, effectively flushing your system of toxins.

A session in the NormaTec boots will start with a "pre-inflate cycle." The attachments will be molded during this cycle to the limbs' exact shape. Once this session is complete (less than 90 seconds), the compression will start in your foot. Similar to the effect of kneading in a massage, each segment will first compress in a "pulsing" manner and then release. This compression pattern process repeats up the limb.

 

Lymphatic vessels and veins have one-way valves that prevent fluid backflow. Similarly, the NormaTec system uses hold pressures to keep the fluid from moving in the wrong direction. The NormaTec Pulse Massage Pattern pulses and releases the hold pressures to prevent fluid backflow, working in partnership with the body's natural circulatory flow. Each portion of the limb gets maximal rest time without needing a significant pause between rest cycles.

During this active recovery session, there is increased blood flow, which delivers nutrients to your muscles and removes waste like lactic acid. It is a favored method for passive recovery, aka doing nothing. All you have to do is set the session time and compression level and then press play. The boots inflate and squeeze through a series of zones from your feet to your hips to enhance blood flow. There is also a zone boost in case parts of your legs need extra TLC.
